Brief description:

Day 1: FRANKFURT – TASHKENT
Direct flight with HY 232 from Frankfurt to Tashkent, arriving at 20:45. Transfer to the hotel.

Day 2: TASHKENT
City tour in Tashkent with breaks for three appointments: Visit to the Cultural Center of the German Minority in Uzbekistan “Wiedergeburt,” a project supporting the German minority in Uzbekistan, supported by the BMI. Visit to the German Evangelical-Lutheran Church in Tashkent, with a conversation with Pastor Schmidt, supported by the Hessen-Nassau Deanery. Appointment at the community center in the old town with the administration. During the city tour, we visit the new town with its large squares and parks, the old town with the Hast Imam Complex and the Chorsu Market. Dinner at the fairy-tale restaurant “Sezam öffne dich.”

Day 3: TASHKENT – NUKUS – MUYNAK
Breakfast at the hotel or lunchbox. Transfer to the national airport and flight to Nukus. After arrival, drive to Muynak and visit the former port, the ship graveyard, and the Aral Sea Museum. Conversation with a staff member from the Aral Sea Museum. Return drive to Nukus.

Day 4: NUKUS – KHIVA
Visit to the Savitsky Museum (Louvre in the Desert) with the second-largest collection of Soviet avant-garde art. Departure to Khiva. After arrival, check-in and an evening orientation tour in Khiva.

Day 5: KHIVA
The city of Khiva is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The tour begins at the “Ota Darvoza” gate. You will see the Muhammad Amin Khan Madrasa, the Kalta Minor, the Kunya Ark Citadel, the Juma Mosque, the Toshxauli Palace, the Pahlavan Mahmud Mausoleum, and the Islom Khodja Minaret within the Ichan Kala Fortress. At the bustling street markets, we can haggle with artisans and embroiderers for the best price and take home a unique souvenir. Khiva’s beautiful, oriental ambiance offers new photo opportunities and places to linger. Special focus of the tour in the old town of Khiva – traces of the German Mennonites, visit to the Museum of German Mennonites. UNESCO workshop on reviving carpet weaving in Khiva, conversation with the workshop leader.

Day 6: KHIVA – BUKHARA
The bus journey to Bukhara takes us through seemingly endless semi-deserts and steppe landscapes. Like Mongolian riders of old, we pass oases along the Amu Darya River. We stop en route for a lunch break and taste fish from the river. After arrival, an orientation tour in the old town.

Day 7: BUKHARA
City tour in Bukhara: We visit the Ark Citadel, rising above the main Registan square, the Ismail Samani and Tschaschma Ajub Mausoleums. The Poi-Kalon Ensemble impresses with the Kalon Minaret. Other highlights on our tour include the Miri-Arab Madrasa, the Magoki-Attori Mosque, and the opposing Ulugbek and Abdulaziz Khan Madrasas. Between visits, we take a break in an oriental teahouse, tasting various spiced teas and coffee with cardamom and cinnamon (optional). At the Labi Hauz Complex, the central water basin provides refreshment, where retirees sit drinking tea or playing dominoes. In the evening, a special experience awaits: at a workshop, we learn the technique of handmade silk paper production and enjoy a special Bukhara delicacy with a miniaturist painter.

Day 8: BUKHARA
Today, we take an excursion to the pilgrimage site of the Sufi teacher Nakschbandy, the summer palace of the last emir “Sitorai Mokhi Khosa,” and see the unusual gatehouse of the Chor Minor Madrasa.

Day 9: BUKHARA – SAMARKAND
Today, we travel by train to Samarkand. Alternatively, a bus journey is planned, during which we visit a 12th-century minaret, a pottery, and the ruins of a caravanserai with a water reservoir. After arrival, the first tour awaits. One of the most famous places in Uzbekistan and a national landmark is the impressive Registan Square (UNESCO World Heritage Site) in the heart of Samarkand. It is bordered on three sides by madrasas (Ulugbek Madrasa, Scher Dor Madrasa, and Tilla Kari Madrasa), offering wonderful photo opportunities. Appointment with a potter family active in the restoration of monuments.

Day 10: SAMARKAND
Samarkand is one of the oldest cities in the world and fascinates with its originality. In the ruins of Afrosiab, you discover the beginnings of the city’s history. At the medieval Ulugbek Observatory, we look at the stars and visit the tomb of the holy Daniel, as well as the necropolis Shah-i-Zinda, where magnificent mausoleums and mosques line up. After visiting the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, we have an appointment with fashion designer Valentina Romanenko, who blends tradition and modernity.

Day 11: SAMARKAND – TASHKENT
In the morning, we travel by high-speed train to Tashkent and continue the city tour. The TV tower, the metro with its artistically decorated stations, the mosque made of white marble, and a performance at the Opera-Ballet House (schedule permitting) round off our cultural program in Uzbekistan.

Day 12: TASHKENT – FRANKFURT
Transfer to the airport and return flight to Frankfurt.
